Air ops field manager

ASF-Belgium is hiring Heads of Mission and Air Operations Field Managers in order to manage and monitor humanitarian air transport projects for national and international NGOs implementing relief aid programmes in remote corners of crisis countries, mainly in Africa.

ASF-Belgium is the only aviation NGO to have developed unique expertise in the assessment of humanitarian air transport needs and participative management of air transport projects, all within a humanitarian conceptual framework and quality system designed for the specific requirements of relief aid organisations in the field. ASF-Belgium operates its own aircraft with bush flying capabilities within the niche of the “Local Proximity Airlift”, thus providing NGO with flexible access to remote areas. ASF-Belgium also intends to extend its service to broader air transport projects by leasing appropriate aircraft for very specific air transport needs.

In order to adapt to changes in the humanitarian air transport sector, characterised by a continuous quest for increased safety, ASF-Belgium is currently applying for an Air Operator’s Certificate (commercial air transport license) and is thus embarking on a complete changeover of its structure and its operating mode at Head Office as well as in the field. In the field, two management positions are involved: one in charge of the operation of the NGO (Head of Mission), and the other in charge of the professional implementation of air operations (Air Ops Field Manager).

Your challenge

Your main challenge is to ensure that air operations comply fully with the national aviation regulations of the mission country, international regulations, and provisions in the Air Operator's Certificate under which the aircraft is operated (owned or on wet lease). This takes place in an environment that is physically, logistically and socio-politically difficult, sometimes even hostile and counter-productive.

Supported by the Head of Mission and supported by the Air Operations Department at Head Office, you will have to face daily challenges to ensure normal operation of the air service, adapt the service to evolving needs, continually maintain a flow of aeronautical information with Head Office (for daily and weekly operational monitoring) and liaison with the civil and military aeronautical authorities involved.

Independent and persistent, your analytical capability will allow you to quickly take effective decisions. You react positively to pressure in a high risk environment. Quality-oriented, you have an acute sense of detail for technical matters, organisation and supervision. You manage relations with the local authority with ease and use diplomacy to ensure air operations are not interrupted due to administrative or political reasons.
